Create something special . . .

(word 65)

Word of the week: SMELL

There are lots of things on my to-do list this week. And some of them, I don’t want to do. (I guess you could say they stink.)

Let’s say one of them is “taxes”. (hypothetically)

Ugh! Do I have to do taxes? Well, no. No one can make me do anything I don’t want to do. But yes, I am choosing to do them to avoid the consequences. (jail)

So, if I’m choosing to do them, is there a way to lessen the pain? To “better” the experience?? as Martha Beck calls it. SURE. A few ideas…

Use the five senses to increase pleasure. Here’s what it would look like.

I could do taxes while . . .
* listening to my favorite piano music. (sound)
* filling the space with a delightful smell. (smell)
* sipping on my favorite beverage. (taste)
* working where the light shines beautifully, indoors or out.
* relaxing in comfy clothes with thick, fuzzy socks. (touch)

Use bribery. When they are done, I could treat myself to 30 minutes of reading, a nap, or a visit with a friend. When we were kids, we were given rewards for achievements. Now, we can give them to ourselves. Whenever we want to accomplish something. Whatever motivates you!

Painful things are not so painful when we “better them”. It just takes a little conscious effort, but it works. Try it! It’s legal.
